The interview question that can absolutely destroy your interview

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to learn the company I work for. I’m passionate about them, I love what they do and I often talk about them in my writing.

So, when I interview people for a position (any position really), I’m looking for the same kind of excitement and passion. Other qualities like communication, leadership, independence, teamwork and confidence also play into the interview.

However, there is one question that I always ask —

“Why did you choose Mastercard?”

It’s such a simple question, that I see people time and time again struggle with. This is probably due to the fact that people often get asked questions in the “What”, “Where” and “How” variety.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Where do you see yourself in 2–3 years?

How do offer criticism to a colleague?

However, it’s the why that is most important. Why us and not someone else? What do we do that’s special, what do we do that’s unique? Why do you want to spend a good chunk of your waking world for this company?

It’s got to be more than money and it’s got to me more than I need a job. That’s table stakes. Both are relevant, but there are candidates that offer more.

Maybe it’s a companies commitment to the environment. Maybe it’s their powerful effect on small business. Maybe it’s their thought leadership or leadership position in the technology segment. Something, anything that shows you care about who you work for.

You can talk around communication, you can talk around leadership. You can’t talk around why you chose something. Be specific, be enthusiastic and get that job.

If you want to learn more about why I love Mastercard, I’ve done all the work for you. I hope to see you soon!

Thank-You for following.
I learned this from the ideas you presented in this and your other “why - i - love"
article.
Complex organizations are made up of simple elements that perform in synchronization to achieve a vision.
Your “Why” question is a good…

Very good point. The 'why' part is important and one should think about it before interviews.
